There is much more to the moving experience than packing boxes. Completing tasks ahead of your moving date will help smooth the entire process.

Make a master check list of what has to be packed and what has to be done prior to moving day with appropriate time lines. Follow these guidelines to help ensure a smooth transition when moving day finally arrives. Remember, the more organized you are, the easier, faster, and safer, the moving day process will be.

2-4 Weeks Before Moving Day
Several weeks before moving day, take your time and go through your home including the garage, attic and basement. Gather what you don’t need and have a garage sale, or better still donate these items to a charity of your choice. Lightening your load will decrease your shipping costs and will make packing and moving much more efficient. Begin packing unimportant goods and seasonal items. Remember it takes time to pack, so give yourself ample time to pack. You don’t want to run out of time or still be in the packing process with movers on site.

Do not forget to arrange the transfer of school records.

1-2 Weeks Before Moving Day
Start to dismantle home gyms and swing sets. When you disassemble furniture and other items, make sure you tape all parts to the main base. Ensure all pertinent addresses and utility changes have been prepared and sent out where necessary. For example hydro, gas, driver’s license, banking information and credit cards. Reserve the elevator and parking if necessary. Make arrangements for small children and pets to be taken care of on moving day.Pack important and sentimental documents so they are easily accessible, for example passports, health records, insurance information.

Last week Prior to Moving
Pack from the least to the most important!! Make sure to leave hand tools and cleaning supplies for last. Drain fuel and oil from motorized tools and lawn mowers. Leave the cap off the lawn mower till moving day. Have the grandfather clock pendulums removed. Begin to disconnect computer and stereo systems. When packing boxes, try to keep them between 20-25 pounds. Please remember, the heavier the item, the smaller the box you should be using. i.e. Books, DVDs etc. 2 cubic, Linens, Towels- 4 cubic. Have your beds disassembled and collapse your bed frames. Have your mirrors off your dressers. Empty your filing cabinets. Have your appliances empty and disconnected, for at least a day before moving. Roll up your carpets and have them tied. Tape in bundles of 5’s any hockey sticks, brooms, shovels, rakes etc. Take arms of treadmills.

Moving Day
Arrange to have the moving truck as close as possible to your front door, or to the loading dock. Have your driveway, walkways and stairs shoveled clean and place salt down if necessary. Have your appliances disconnected. Place the goods you need first and identify these boxes with clear lables or bright stickers. Advise the movers of these boxes and see if they will be first off the truck. Items that you will need first include hand tools, toilet paper, toiletries, garbage bags, cleaning supplies, alarm clock, coffee maker and your children’s favorite toys. Disassemble beds and collapse bed frames. Clear all pathways to furniture. Customers are not permitted on the moving truck. This is not only for insurance purposes, but also for our customer’s safety. If possible try to send children and pets to relatives or friends for the day.

If applicable in apartments have the elevator on service with pads up before our arrival.

At Your New Residence
Make sure you know where large or heavy furniture is to be placed. It is time consuming for Vancouver Movers to move the same piece multiple times. Place labels on the doors at your new home to identify the rooms. This will help expedite placement of your boxes, if they are clearly marked for each specific room. This method is faster than the movers having to ask“where is this going?”
